Itineraries

Home / Itineraries

Since centuries it has been called Lunigiana, the land of Luni, an ancient Roman city which no longer exists. It’s the valley of the river Magra, which opens like an amphitheatre surrounded by the Apennines and the Apuan Alps, unfolding hills, woods and meadows. The best way to discover Lunigiana and meet its people is walking its many paths and hamlets, listening to the stories that its stones have to tell, enjoying its beautiful landscape. Our itineraries follow the medieval pilgrim paths, passing through silent chestnut woods and reaching river springs. When they don’t fly, butterflies trip along lightly, not to disturb the trees’ singing.

History

Along the Via Francigena, but also in minor valleys, there are numerous traces of the past times: several medieval castles and walled hamlets, prestigious villa and palazzo, towers and fortifications, Roman churches, statue stele (anthropoid figures sculpted on stone monoliths over 2000 years ago which represents the mystery of an ancient civilization).

Nature

Surrounded by the Apennines – recently declared National Park – Lunigiana offers a natural landscape to be experienced not only by foot, but also by bike or horse along its pasture lands, or by canoe or with a fishing rod along its pristine rivers and gorges. It is not unusual to spot deer, squirrels, golden eagles and other animals in the chestnut and beech woods or in grasslands.

Food & wine and ancient traditions

Signs of an ancient rural civilization are visible in the landscape of Lunigiana: pasturelands connected by mule tracks along which you can find mills, terraced chestnut woods, rural hamlets and mountain pastures villages. Nowadays, it is still possible to meet farmers with their mules, chestnuts or blueberries pickers, shepherds with their flock, showing a civilization still alive.

Our itineraries include hamlets, culture, history, food and artisan workshops. You can build your own itinerary choosing from the activities below
